Fluvanna Sports in Review 9-2

Football

The FCHS Varsity Football team has struggled to keep up with other high school teams this season. Freedom South Riding slaughtered Fluvanna when the Flucos lost 0-42 on Aug. 26. “We came in with high expectations, and we just didn’t achieve what we were trying to do. But next week, we will get this W,” said Junior Josh Carlton. Meanwhile, the JV team took on Spotsylvania on Aug. 31, pulling ahead and taking the lead during the first half. Thanks to the thunderstorms, the decision was made to call the game at halftime, but despite the abrupt ending, Fluvanna won 13-6 and solidified a win for JV this year.

“We’re playing as a team this year. We’re not fighting each other. We’re playing as one,” said Sophomore Josh Elliott. With good and bad news for both teams, Fluvanna football is focusing on stepping up their game in hopes of improving through the season. The varsity team, in particular, was hoping for good results in their game against Spotsylvania on Sept. 2 at FCHS.

Volleyball

The FCHS Volleyball Tournament on Aug. 27 did not necessarily go in either team’s favor, but Fluvanna is still working hard to continue the legacy left behind by previous Flucos. In the first game of the day, the varsity team won their initial game 2-0. Then, by a quick turn of events, they lost the second game 0-2. They held the lead again and won the third game 2-1, but then lost 0-2 once again in the fourth game.  “They really did play their hearts out,” said Manager Andrew Farruggio ‘19.

Varsity’s game on Sept. 1 against Turner Ashby did not go as well. The JV team played two out of three games, but lost both of them, while varsity played three games. Despite their efforts, neither team could keep up with Turner Ashby. They did, however, never stop playing as hard as they could. “I think we have played well as a team. There isn’t one person that stands out more than another. Yes, there are more advanced players, but we are all on the right path. I think our defense is really improving, and we are very versatile,” said Madison Stoltz ‘18.

Varsity lost their first game 13-25, but the scores continued to rise for Fluvanna. The second game ended with a loss of 22-25, and the third with 23-25. Both teams are having a rough start, but they plan to work hard and turn it around for the next game. “It’s not about where we started or how we started, it’s about how we finish. Each day we work hard to push ourselves and one another to improve and to become an all-around stronger team,” said Tyler Haislip ‘17.

As for JV, they played a competitive game which went down to the wire, but ultimately lost by a single point. Both teams take on their next opponents at a tournament on Sept. 10 at Albemarle.

Cross Country

To start off the season, the Fluco Cross Country team travelled to Panorama Farms for the season’s inaugural meet at the Ragged Mountain Cup on Sept. 30. The Fluvanna girls had three relay teams in the two-mile relay, with the girls’ A team placing 5th overall. Three Lady Flucos placed in the top 25: Junior Kristen Cabrera placed 4th, Junior Saige Haney placed 15th, and Senior Jackie Rodriguez placed 16th. “The cup is super exciting because it is the only race where you have relays and really have to work as one, “ said Haney. The boys had two relays in the meet, although neither placed. The A relay consisted of Juniors Jack Rice and Conrad Graham and Sophomores Jason Boyle and Cory Martin. The top runner for the Fluco boys was Rice, who ran an 11:48. The next cross country meet is Sept. 7 at Madison.

Golf

The Fluco golf schedule has been jam-packed lately, and this week the gold team had two matches. Fluco golf travelled to William Monroe on Aug. 29 where they lost by a score of 167 to 182 with Senior Jack Stanke leading the team with 39 points. Their Aug. 31 match was cancelled due to rain. So on Sept. 1 the team travelled to Albemarle where the Flucos stole a win with the score of 179-158. Standouts were Jack Kershner scoring 44, followed by Stanke and Joe Pace, who both scored 43. “The players are working hard and preparing for the conference and district tournaments,” said Coach Bryan Searcy.  The next golf match is Sept. 7 at home against Western Albemarle.
