Fluco Sports in Review: Jan. 16

Swim and Dive

In a week where most sports were cancelled, Swim and Dive prevailed—probably because in the winter they swim in warm, indoor pools. On Jan. 21, Swim faced one of their greatest rivals, FUMA, in a four-way meet including Louisa and Orange. Once again, Fluvanna placed well. The girls’ team did exceptionally well on their side of the meet, just barely losing the meet due to mixed up relays, according to senior swimmer Cara Wissinger. The boys, meanwhile, came out on top of everyone except FUMA, which won the meet. But this meet, successful as it was, wasn’t the pinnacle of Swim and Dive’s week. “It was about the same as every other meet this year,” said senior swim member and state-qualifying diver Lucas Reynard. “It was a good meet, but there were some mistakes that were made [at that meet] that were corrected on Friday [Jan 23].”

In fact, the Jan. 23 meet was Fluvanna’s true triumph. It wasn’t a large meet—just between Fluvanna and Louisa– but it was a great one. “From the judging standpoint and the quality of everyone’s dives, it was a heck of a meet,” Reynard said. Fluvanna Swim and Dive demolished Louisa in that meet, with the boys’ winning by over 110 points. The girls won by a similarly wide margin. “Louisa usually has a small team,” said Wissinger, “so we usually win against them, but we’ve had a strong season and we have some really good relay teams and some really strong swimmers that win us points.”

As for Reynard, the meet was “definitely the best meet we’ve had this year,” and he was thrilled to learn that his work at the Louisa meet qualified him for States in Diving. “It was great,” Reynard said. “I was really looking forward to that meet. I just went out there and did what I normally did and everything fell into place, everything went good for me.”

Thanks to poor weather, the team’s next meet was rescheduled for Feb. 2. It will be senior night, when the team will be honoring departing seniors Lauren Cabrera, Cailin Dobbins, Hayley Kline, Miriam Lokits, Abbey Neifert, Peyton Olinger, Kaitlin Presley, Alexis Waller, Nickol Willis, Cara Wissinger, Lane Kadleck, Bryant Atkins, Hunter Hotz, and Lucas Reynard.

Boys’ Basketball

The Flucos’ went 1 for 3 last week in basketball matches against other counties.

Fluvanna has certainly had better weeks than this one. On Jan. 20, Fluvanna suffered a hard loss at home against Albemarle with a score of 64 to 85. But a rough start to the week did not go avenged as the Flucos rose up from their loss to Albemarle, only for the win to be held just out of reach by another defeat. On Jan. 23, they faced Powhatan in an away game that they lost in a close match, 59 to 49.

Not ones to give up easily, the Flucos returned strong over the weekend, finally claiming their victory against Amherst, a dangerously close game that they were all glad to have played. During that game, on Jan. 24, Fluvanna pulled through with a much-needed victory over Amherst with a score of 62 to 54.

The Flucos will return to the court on Jan. 30, where they will be going head to head against Western Albemarle, a sure challenge to the boys in Blue and Gold. If the past weekend is any indication, though, the Flucos aren’t one to back down from a challenge.

Due to poor weather, numerous sports found their games cancelled or postponed last week, including Scholastic Bowl, Indoor Track, and Wrestling. Following are tentatively scheduled games for this week:

Scholastic Bowl – Jan. 28, John Handley Conference

Boys’ and Girls’ Indoor Track – Jan. 28, Jefferson District Meet at FUMA

Wrestling – Jan. 28 – Culpeper

Swim/Dive – Feb. 2, Meet at FUMA against Madison and Goochland
