Fluco Cheer Wins First “Game Day” Competition
March 3, 2022
On Feb. 26, the Fluvanna County High School coed cheer team competed in their first Game Day Competition and came in first place. Although they had a limited time of a month to prepare, Kenny Larios, the cheer team’s coach, was able to get the team into shape and made sure they were ready for the competition.
“The team had a month to prepare for this event. They had to learn the rules to this division and did it successfully with limited practices, games in the evening, and 7 AM practices with 100% attendance,” said Larios.
The team had to adjust to the requirements and pressure of the competition, “Game Day consists of Band Chant, a situational chant (offense or defense) not knowing what the announcer will call so they must be ready, crowd involvement cheer, and fight song[…]Game Day is a whole different division. This is a new division VHSL wants to grow for the winter season in the future and start a state championship. This was the first invitational to promote Game Day,” Larios stated.
