Fluvanna County High School has earned the Blue Star School Award for 2018 for W!SE Financial Literacy.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the High School has received this honor. The High School administered W!SE certification tests for the first time during the 2013-2014 school year. The school earned an 82 percent pass rate on the test, with 249 high school students earning the credential during the 2017-18 school year.

In addition to earning the Blue Star School Award, teachers Gary Greenwood and Darren McCauley each earned the Gold Star Teacher Award. This award was earned by only 556 teachers from 27 states. To be considered for the Gold Star Award, a teacher must have achieved a 93 percent passing rate in either the Fall 2017 or the Spring 2018 W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Test.

Working In Support of Education (W!SE) is an educational 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational support services nationwide, building financial literacy, fostering business and social entrepreneurship, and preparing students for college and the global workplace.

Fluvanna County High School also won the Region V Governor’s David Ricardo Challenge in Economics in 2018.

Four students from Greenwood’s Economics and Personal Finance class took a 30-question online exam with questions that align with Virginia’s economics and personal finance SOLs. The team of Somerville Munt, Keera Finley, Bayley Leyshon, and Rebecca McCann earned the top score in Region V.

“I am so proud of the work our teachers did to get this program started. The students demonstrated their understanding of the importance of financial literacy. It is so exciting to be among the best schools in the country,” stated Gilliam.
