A few days after the Fluvanna SPCA wrapped up their adoption event at the FCHS football game on Oct. 3, the FSPCA announced that two pups had officially been adopted. They brought six dogs to the event and offered information on how attendees could support their efforts.
Throughout the night at the Oct. 3 game, the dogs caught the attention of staff, students, and Fluvanna residents who were able to view the dogs on the tennis courts. This not only created interest in adoption, but also in supporting the FSPCA’s mission of giving every “fur baby” a safe and loving home.
“It was amazing. From the moment we set up, we had nonstop visitors and the dogs were exhausted and showed so much love by the time it was over. Sleepy Sal and Sundrop were the two dogs we brought to the event and they fell right to sleep the moment they got in the truck,” said FCHS teacher and FSPCA volunteer Melody Morgan.
Though there were many visitors at the FSPCA tent, there were no official adoptions by the end of the night.
“Several students filled out applications prior to the event, but you must be at least 18 to adopt. No one officially put in an application at the event, but we had many interested attendees come over and meet the dogs, as well as inquire about the adoption process,” said Morgan.
However, the next day, someone applied and adopted dogs Sleepy Sal and Almond from the event.
FSPCA staff and volunteers continue to work to find homes for the animals while urging local residents to help, even if they can’t adopt. You can donate directly, purchase items from their Amazon and Chewy wishlists, or volunteer your time at the center. Volunteers (18+) can walk dogs, take a dog out for a “doggy day out,” or foster pets to give them a temporary home while they await their forever family. You can learn more at the FSPCA website.
“The staff also work so hard and have such difficult jobs that having treats dropped off to them really helps to lift their morale on those difficult and overwhelming days,” said Morgan.
