The Auxiliary Gym was transformed into a dance hall on May 9 during 4th block for the annual “Our Prom,” a dance for all special education students to enjoy. The Student Government Association (SGA) team decorated the gym during their third block, working together to make a memorable afternoon for the students.
SGA created a music playlist and brought in a sound system and lighting to create a lively environment that included a photo area. Food was coordinated by FCPS Director of Special Education Jennifer Valentine.
The concept of Our Prom was inspired by other high schools that created similar dances for their special education students.
“Not every student can make it to the normal prom,” said TV Production and SGA Adviser David Small. “We wanted to hold a dance that would give everyone a chance to have a memorable prom.”
Special education teachers Nicholas Ward and Amy Hill celebrated alongside their students, including Owen Seay, who said, “I am very excited because I like the music and the food.”
Another student, Chris Skeen, agreed. “I am very excited for Our Prom. It is always a lot of fun,” he said.
For many students, Our Prom is an unforgettable event that celebrates the end of the school year.
“It’s my favorite event our school holds. It’s nice to see everyone come together and have a great time,” said Small.
