Some students have been left confused at the start of this school year due to all the new changes to the lunch line, but one of the more puzzling additions is the introduction of new snacks and drinks available for purchase in the breakfast and lunch lines. The cafeteria now offers a variety of options for students to add to their meals with items such as sodas, water, cookies and chips. They also sell their drinks beside the cafeteria in the Pepsi Machines. The add-ons are all $1 to $2, which is cheaper than most of the vending machines around the school.
However, some feel this new feature is not without its issues. “The new snacks are a bad idea. The kids aren’t getting their nutrients and the snacks are unhealthy. The kids don’t need all that junk food,” said junior Cyril Tundo.
Others have a more positive take on the new items. “The snacks are a good idea because they add more to your lunch if you’re hungry enough to eat more than what was originally for lunch. They’re cheap and easy to get too, which I like because now my friends won’t ask me for my food anymore,” said sophomore Luke Bowman.
Some admit to being confused about the addition of the snack system and how it works. “I didn’t even know that the snack line existed. I think it sounds interesting, though. I want to try it out at lunch tomorrow,” said freshman Bryan Perdomo Vasquez.
Cafeteria Manager Sheri Casero noted that “All the snacks also have to meet certain USDA guidelines. That’s why all the snacks and drinks are whole grain/baked/zero sugar.” She added that while snacks are not free for the students, “we can’t charge for the snacks if the students don’t have money in their account.”
