Cut, Style, and Dye

October 28, 2019

Cosmetology and Barbering is a hidden gem at the end of the 1300 hall. Students spend hours a week learning new hair cutting and cosmetic techniques and practicing on themselves and others. “We work a lot with the Special Ed kids because they have more of a free schedule and can come once a week,” said senior Samantha Satterly. Recently, class members did manicures and styled hair for Special Education students who were attending the “Our Homecoming” dance on Oct. 18.

Teacher Irene Hall is in her second year of teaching at Fluvanna. She lives in Northern Virginia and drives close to three hours round-trip to Fluvanna everyday. “I like that I was hired to restructure the program and plan to move closer in the future,” said Hall. She began her career at Potomac Academy of Hair Design in 1988. She worked in North Carolina for two years and soon after, moved back to Virginia and started in the barbering industry in 1995. “I’ve spent the last 25 years in the barbering industry as well as getting my instructor’s license and my Virginia teaching license. I started teaching in the public system four years ago,” said Hall.

Fluvanna offers three Cosmetology classes. At the end of Cosmetology III, students are able to take the state boards exam. This test, if passed, will qualify them to become certified cosmetologists. “It is a pretty big deal because we take those in April,” said senior and Cosmetology III student Hailee Shifflett.

During the three years in the class, students learn how to cut, style and dye hair. They also learn how to give manicures and pedicures, as well as facials and waxing. The students have a chapter in the book they are required to read each week and fill out a packet with that information. They are given a certain amount of lab days where students take the skills they learned and apply them to real life. They practice on humans as well as mannequin heads to perfect their skills.

To support two causes during the month of October, breast cancer and bullying, Cosmetology is offering $5 hair extensions in colors such as pink, blue and orange. “It’s for our department, but it’s also for a good cause because it’s two things [breast cancer and bullying] that people go through, “ said Satterly. This is Hall’s first time introducing extensions to the school and she plans to keep it going in the future. They are available during all lunches in the cafeteria during October.

In addition, the class offers services to students who are looking for a low price on something that would be pricey at a normal salon. It is the choice of the students whether they would like to get their hair done by students who are uncertified. Hall is there by their side to make sure that if anything goes wrong, she is there to help.
