The Second Coming of Morrison

Mr. Matt Morrison–the man, the myth, the legend–has been reunited with FCHS after a year away from the Flucos.  Many freshmen and sophomores may not know of this prodigious public educator due to his absence from the 2012-13 school year.  In case you’re unfamiliar with him, Morrison teaches various levels of History and was the Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School Senior Adviser before he left to pursue another career.  Juniors and seniors may fondly recall when he was democratically voted 2011 “Emperor” of the school at that year’s Homecoming Pep Rally.  His prosperous rule is widely known among upperclassmen as the school’s “golden age of Morrison.”

In the spring of 2012, Morrison made the announcement that he would not be returning the next year because he had taken another job as a financial advisor. It was a blow to those students who had looked forward to having him for AP Government or BRVGS. “We were all heartbroken when he told our Governor’s School class we wouldn’t have him as seniors. It was actually somewhat emotional. The “second coming” of Morrison is sure to be glorious, though,” said senior Tyler Sparks.  The current seniors are happy to see him around the school, but last year’s graduates missed Morrison’s “second coming” entirely.

“I’m super jealous that Mr. Morrison came back even when it was too late to have him as my teacher again. He’s a great teacher and Fluvanna is lucky to have him back,” said 2013 Fluco graduate Jenna Nemeth.

“I came back because I missed teaching more than I thought I would.  It’s what I’m best at and I made peace with that.  It sounds a little ‘Buddha-ish’,” said Morrison, [but] “I am really glad to be back. Everyone has been really nice.”

When asked to give his opinion (in three words) on the many changes the school has made in his absence, here’s what Morrison had to say:

The new building: “I love it.”

His new room’s speakers: “I utilize them.”

Inclusion of eighth graders: “They are small.”

The new grading scale: “A little weird.”

The new block schedule: “A big improvement.”

The school has been incredibly receptive to this returning faculty member.  Students, administrators, and counselors appreciate what it means to the school to have Morrison back. “I was surprised they didn’t try to get him back last year,” one counselor remarked.  Although Morrison was technically brought in to fill the position left by Mrs. Griebenauw, who is on sabbatical, his long time fans suspect he will have a home at FCHS.
