The Turning Point

November 8, 2018

For years, many in the Jefferson District haven’t considered the Flucos as a team to beat the Orange County Hornets or, for that matter, to make a playoff run. However, that all changed this season as the Flucos have had the first winning season in nearly 17 years, as well as a 6-4 record as of Nov. 6 as they head into the play offs.

One could argue that a major turning point for the season was when Sept. 29, when the Flucos took down the Hornets by a score of 22-21. “Not a lot of the Fluvanna players were very nervous before the game against Orange County. [Our] team felt confident since we had a good week of practice,” said starting quarterback Kobe Edmonds.

Yet going into half-time, the Hornets had grabbed the lead with a score of 21-7. “The Flucos were hanging their heads, not sure if they were going to win the game,” said Edmonds. However, Edmonds had a few key plays in the second half, including a laser pass to senior Joey Van Dyke on a fourth down to keep the Flucos’ drive alive. Edmonds also had a rushing touchdown on a scramble, followed by a two-point conversion to make a comeback and ultimately win the game against Orange.

“The key asset to winning the game against Orange County was no turnovers, holding onto the ball, good defense, and creating turnovers,” said starting wingback Prophett Harris. “I feel as if I practiced very well and so did the rest of the team the week before the game,” he added. Harris had some key plays of his own, including a pass deflection that would have resulted in a touchdown for Orange had Harris had not deflected it.

The Flucos’ Head Coach, Mike Morris, was pleased with the result. “It was a great team effort to come back and win the game. Defense was not very consistent, but [we] made some very important plays, including fumble recoveries and interceptions,” said Morris. Morris was also pleased with his offensive line, although he added that “there was still work that needed to be done on the line. His O-line was on-and-off and had great blocks on the last drive of the game.” Overall, he said, “It was a tough game to win against a big school and against a district opponent. The whole coaching staff was surprised to see a lot of players step up for injured players in very important positions.

In addition to their surprise win against Orange, the Flucos also took down the Charlottesville Black Knights and the Powhatan Indians. While they lost their last regular season game on Nov. 3 against Louisa, their overall record was enough to secure their first playoff appearance since 2000 which will take place on Nov. 9 at Brookville High School.
