While most students at FCHS are focused on their spring break plans, Student Government Association (SGA) members have been working hard to plan the third annual Hands on Fluvanna community service event, set to take place on March 29.

Prior to the event, SGA members contacted local businesses and residents to determine what people and groups needed help. They then created a Google form open to all citizens in the county to receive more information on job sites, as well as the required supplies and amount of students necessary to complete the task. Job sites were given a two-week deadline to fill out the form.

Once job sites were determined, another Google Form was made for FCHS teachers to sign up to volunteer. Teachers and club sponsors were given their top three choices of sites where they wanted their clubs or classes to volunteer

“This Hands on Fluvanna, we have received a record amount of job sites to volunteer at,” said SGA President Payton Day. Jobs ranged from cleaning up playgrounds and beaches in Lake Monticello, to doing yard work for various citizens in the county, to completing art projects at West Central Primary and Central Elementary schools.

There will be four service stations set up for students who aren’t leaving the school premises. They will be separated by grade and rotate every 45 minutes. The stations include putting together bead bracelets for hospice patients, making placemats for the local food pantry, packing care packages for the USO Troops, and watching a service video in the auditorium.

With each Hands on Fluvanna, SGA hopes that the event will continue to grow and that the idea of serving others will spread to more schools and communities. SGA seems ever closer to meeting that goal, since Day noted that Western Albemarle High School recently contacted the FCHS SGA for guidance on how to start their own day of service.
