FCHS’s Staff Member of the Month for the month of February is Rose Brogan, who teaches Physics, AP Physics, and Chemistry I and Honors Chemistry. She has been a teacher for 26 years, and has spent 21 of them at Fluvanna.

Brogan decided to be a teacher because she wanted to have the same schedule as her children. She also wanted to be involved in their school system. She chose to teach Chemistry and Physics because she liked applied math problems and had worked for a wood chemistry professor for two years while in college.

The biggest challenge for many teacher is getting students to do all of their work, but Brogan says her favorite part is working with them. “I enjoy working with the students and helping them solve problems,” she said.

In addition to teaching, Brogan also coaches the cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track teams at FCHS. She started her coaching career while teaching in Tennessee. A student saw her running and asked if she wanted to help start a cross country team. She said yes, and that has led to a two-decade coaching career which has taken many student runners to the states level.

Her favorite thing about coaching is watching the athletes improve over the season. “The biggest challenge as a coach is getting athletes to believe they can do more,” said Brogan, who has been a past recipient of Coach of the Year for cross country and indoor track.

Brogan, whose husband works at Fork Union Military Academy, has two sons in the military, and a daughter, Saige, who is a senior here at FCHS.  In her free time, Brogan likes to run, cook, read, and travel, including to exotic spots like Belize.
