Transformers 4 Preview: Better Off Extinct?

Oh no. Not another one.

That’s the thought that ran through my head when I learned I only had six months left… until yet another Transformers movie arrives to taunt me in June 2014. The very first Transformers movie wasn’t all that bad, but the second one was probably the 11th worst movie ever made and the third movie was the 12th. So will this fourth film get a place on my dreaded worst list? To my surprise, the early indications suggest otherwise.

This new movie goes in a completely different direction from the three previous movies. A reboot and sequel at the same time, it finally removes the terrible lead from the previous movies, Shia LaBeouf, and swaps him and any other returning actors with a new cast led by Mark Wahlberg from the movies Ted and The Fighter, and Nicola Pertz from The Last Airbender (another awful movie). The Transformers action toy characters Optimus Prime and Bumblebee return as well, along with some lesser-known Transformers (no doubt in an effort to raise sales at Toys R Us). Michael Bay returns as director (a potentially scary thought since we don’t need another Transformers 2), although he claims he is going in a new direction with this installment.

The film will be titled Transformers: Age of Extinction and is the first out of a new trilogy which, by the experience of these movies, will turn out like the first trilogy: The first movie will be good, and the next two will be awful. And honestly, it would be better that way; three new Transformers movies don’t need to be good, they only need to make money, and everyone knows they will certainly do the latter. But if the first movie is good, it pretty much guarantees that people will go and see the second and third films, which is not really good filmmaking, but is a good way to buy that island you’ve always wanted in Tahiti if you’re the producer.

Overall, all we can do is wait and see what happens with this new movie. If it’s good, then maybe the reboot was a decent idea. After all, maybe more destruction and giant robot action is just what we need.
