Sophomore Jason Dech is one of the FCHS bands trombone players, as well as a star student and gymnast. Recently, Dech won first place at the district band competition for the second year in a row. This means he will be a contestant at the All-State Band competition on April 7 at the Richmond Carpenter Theater. He will also play a solo for the Charlottesville Municipal Band for their spring concert on April 22.

“Districts was far easier, but All-State band is a whole different challenge,” said Dech.

Dech started playing the trombone back in the 5th grade, which started his interest in the instrument.

Being part of the school band, Dech gets ample time to practice with his instrument. “During band class, it’s more about improving the team’s skills, but individual practice is all about focusing on improving yourself,” he said. On average, Dech practices for three to five hours every single week, in both school and independent practice.

Dech intends to go to college after high school for a major in the field of computer science, and a minor in music.

Dech has one sister, Meghan Dech, who is in the 8th grade.
