The Madness Begins: A Guide to the Round of 64

March is the time of year all college basketball fans crave. The word “madness” explains the NCAA tournament the best. This post-season is indeed a complete madness for fans of college hoops, with many people losing work hours–as well as sleep– to their favorite teams. It began with the First Four– four games played to qualify for the tournament.

Next was the Round of 64, where 64 teams faced off against each other to get to the next round, followed by the Round of 32. On March 23, it is on to the Sweet Sixteen, then the Elite Eight, then off to the Final Four, all the way to the NCAA Championship Game. This year’s March Madness tournament started on March 15 and will end on April 3.

The upsets that happened in the Round of 64 included teams like the 6 seed SMU losing to the 11th seed USC in a very physical matchup with a final score of 65-66. At first, SMU had a double digit lead, but USC had been in this position before, as they have came back 13 times from double-digit deficits in the regular season, as well as once in the tournament already.

This game came down to the last seconds as USC’s Elijah Stewart flew to the corner to get off the eventual game, winning three with 00.36 seconds to go. After the three-point shot, SMU was forced to foul the next possession. Unfortunately for SMU, the USC Trojans hit their free throws to clinch the game.

Meanwhile, the 6th seed Creighton in the Midwestern conference was also upset by the 11th seed Rhode Island, with Creighton only scoring 72 points while Rhode Island scored 84. This difference in this game was free throws, with Rhode Island going 28-31 (90.3%) from the free throw line, while Creighton going 13-19 (68.4%) from the line. Rhode Island also had 8 steals, while Creighton only had 2.

In the Western Conference, the 11 seed upset the 6 seed Maryland, winning by 11. Xavier beat Maryland in just about every category, including their field goal percentage of 50%, while Maryland shot just 40.7%. Xavier shot fewer three pointers, but they were also more accurate, going 9-23 from the three-point line, with Maryland going only 7-27 from three-point territory. Xavier also had more steals, rebounds, and assists than Maryland.

In the Southern Conference there were two upsets, including one which many people predicted, with the 12 seed Middle Tennessee beating the 5 seed Minnesota by 9 points in a final score of 72-81. The difference in this game was a three-point percentage for Middle Tennessee; they shot 53.8% from the three-point line, while Minnesota only shot 28.6% from three-point range.

Middle Tennessee also won the rebound as well as the assist battle against Maryland. Senior forward number 30, Reggie Upshaw, Jr., led Middle Tennessee with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Also being upset in the Southern Conference was the 7 seed Dayton, losing to the 10 seed Wichita State by 6 points, ending in a final of 58-64. This game was decided by Wichita State’s defense with 40 rebounds, and 8 blocks. Wichita State was led by a freshman guard, number 11, Landry Shamet, scoring 13 points.
