Fluvanna Sports in Review 2-24

Girls’ Basketball – 

The Lady Flucos’ basketball season came to end on Feb. 17 when they lost to Western Albemarle at Broadway High School in the Conference 29 consolation game. The score was 42-36, leading them with a season record of 15-10.

Three girls were rewarded for their hard work on the court this season, including freshman Nevaeh Ivory who recieved First Team All-Conference 29 honors, and junior Jemika Johnson and Senior Chaniya Brown, who also received honorable mentions. “We had a great season, I wouldn’t want to spend it with any other group of girls,” said Brown.

Boys’ Basketball –

After a challenging season with an overall record of 1-22, the boys’ basketball team had one member receive an award for his hard work on the court. Junior AJ Gregory earned the Honorable Mention award.

“Winning the award was a nice accomplishment. I worked really hard this offseason, but I have to give thanks to my parents, teammates, and coaches for their time and efforts,” said Gregory.

Swim –

The girls’ swim team had four girls win All-conference and All-Region honors: Fefe Nardone, Calyn McNaul, Morgan Maupin, and Zoe Moore were All-Region, while Olivia Strickland was named All-Conference. Three girls earned All-Conference for dive including, Lydia Reynard (who also earned All-Region and All-State), Anna Hurdle, and Emily Baker.

As for the boys’ swim team, four Flucos earned All-Conference honors, including Morgan Milburn, Alex Scalzo, Mike Difazio (who also got All-Region), and Brennan King. On Feb. 18,19, the boys’ swim team placed 15th overall in the state meet where DiFazio took fifth place in the 100 back event.

As for the girls, Nardone placed fifth in the 100 fly and also in the 100 back. Reynard finished her last season of diving in sixth place, while the girls 200 free relay (Nardone, Maupin, Moore, and McNaul) went home with eighth place. “It is definitely a bittersweet moment knowing that it was my last high school meet,” said Nardone. Nardone was recognized as the CBS 19 Newsplex Student Athlete of the Week. As for the girls, they placed 12th overall at the state meet.

Wrestling –

After a long and eventful season, Ian Dillon came home from the state wrestling meet at Roanoke College with fifth place. “He worked tirelessly and wrestled very tough competition to earn his place on the podium,” said Assistant Coach Jordan Divine. Dillon also earned All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State honors.

In addition, four other wrestlers received All-Conference honors, including Mason Justus, John Bland, Ethan Vernatter, and Matthew Haden.

Indoor Track –

Eleven Lady Flucos earned All-Conference honors this season, including Renee Custer, Kieri Hart, Brianna Parker, Shae Jonkman, Ashlee Pieno, Amina Wilson, Jackie Rodriguez, LaMaya Lacy, Saige Haney, Cyan Coates, and Matasha Martin. In addition, five boys earned All-Conference honors: Griffin Klauder, Colby Martin, Jake Morris, Zach Hartzog, and Prophett Harris, who was also named Conference Champion in triple jump.

The girls’ indoor track team competed in the regional tournament on Feb. 17 placing fourth overall. Many girls brought home some very impressive hardware for the Flucos. Martin was the regional champion in the 55 meter dash and hurdle. She also placed fifth in the 300 meter run.

Meanwhile, Coates ran her way to the regional championship in the 300 meter and broke the Fluvanna school record of 14 years with a time of 42.31 in the process. As for Lacy and Custer, they earned All-Region awards in the shot put and 55 m hurdles respectively. Martin, Lacy, Hart, Coates, Rodriguez, Haney, Custer, and Wilson moved onto the state meet.

Meanwhile, Jake Morris and Zach Hartzog were named All-Region in shot put. Hartzog had a state-qualifying throw of 44’8”.
