A Future in Singing

While some people can get stage fright singing in front of large crowds, FCHS senior Brandon Cheung thrives on the spotlight. Cheung has loved to sing as long as he can remember. “I remember singing along to the radio when I was little,” said Cheung, who has been involved with choir since fourth grade.

Not only does Cheung love to sing, he loves to hear others sing as well. While he is not a fan of country and rap, he adores other genres such as alternative pop and indie music. His favorite bands are Maroon 5 and OneRepublic. Cheung has also had some memorable moments during his high school career, including going to districts and singing at a retirement home his junior year.

Cheung hopes to be a professional singer as a career and plans on going to Shenandoah University, a private, liberal arts school in Winchester. He was attracted to the university due to its small size and the fact that he is familiar with the area. His goal is to pursue a degree as a music director.

FCHS choir teacher Horace Scruggs has taught Cheung since his freshmen year and describes Cheung as a very good singer who hasn’t missed a single concert his whole high school career. “Scruggs was a huge help when deciding which college I should go to. In the end, it came down between Longwood University and Shenandoah University,” said Cheung. He will also be a part of All States at the end of April, where he will sing with 300 other students from around the state.

Unlike some students who are dead set on their career goals after high school or college, Cheung wants to keep his options open. One idea is to become a choir teacher like Scruggs. His second plan is to move to New York City, where he would like to pursue a music career. “I’m not interested in becoming the next thing. I’m more focused on being a singer as a career,” said Cheung.
