Boys’ Basketball:

The varsity boys’ basketball team had an end to their season on Feb.17. They played their Conference Quarterfinals against Western Albemarle and were defeated by a score of 72-36. Junior Zabian Dudley had an exceptional 10 points alongside his teammate, Senior Chris Washington, who scored 8 points.

Although the boys had a tough season, they still managed to have a positive outlook on the game. “Every season is a journey. We didn’t have the season we expected, but regardless of our record, we continued to fight and become better individuals on and off the court,” said Sophomore AJ Gregory.

Girls’ Basketball:

The varsity girls’ basketball team had their Conference quarter-finals on Feb. 17, defeating Western Albemarle 43-37. Senior Brianna Harris was a huge asset to the team, scoring 16 points for the Lady Flucos. “Overall, we played well as a team considering one of our top players was sick. We came together and won our game,” said Harris. This was the first win the Lady Flucos had had at Western in 12 years.

The team then moved on to the semifinals at Spotswood on Feb. 19, where they had a loss of 61-21. “They were a really good team. We struggled to score and it felt like they never missed a shot [but] I think we gave it our best effort. They were just overall more rounded as a team,” said Senior Kate Stutz. Although they lost, they still advanced onto the consolation (3rd place) game. On Feb. 20, they played at Turner Ashby with a disappointing outcome, ending their final game of the season with a score of 55-28.

Swim and Dive:

The girls’ team had three phenomenal divers attend States on Feb. 18. Junior Lydia Reynard took 5th place, Junior Anna Hurdle placed 10th, and Junior Emily Baker came in 11th place. “Although the judges were very hard and it was time-consuming, it was a great experience to go to States for my third year in a row,” said Hurdle.

All athletes who swam in the state meet at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center placed in the top 16. The girls placed 12th out of 26, scoring a total of 87 points. The boys placed 19th out of 24 with a total of 34 points. All swimmers had their personal best times. Junior Mike DiFazio placed 11th in the 100 backstroke and 14th in the 100 fly, Sophomore Caylyn McNaul placed 6th in the 100 breaststroke, earning All-State honors, and Junior Fefe Nardone placed 7th in the 100 fly. Both the girls’ and boys’ 200 freestyle relays made it back to finals and placed 9th.

Indoor Track and Field:

Fluvanna Indoor Track and Field had a successful regional meet at Liberty University on Feb.19. The girls’ team placed 3rd overall. The boys’ team did not place, but senior Keegan Campanelli scored 8 points with his 2nd place finish at pole vault. Junior Matasha Martin was a huge benefit to the girls, scoring 48 points for the team and earning Runner of the Year and Field Event Athlete of the Year of Region 3A West.

Junior Erin Blackburn, Sophomore Kristen Cabrera, Seniors Keegan Campanelli and Avery Haislip, Sophomore Saige Haney, and Martin will be attending States as individuals on Feb. 26, along with the girls’ 4x800m relay team consisting of Senior Bridget Bossong, Sophomores Kristen Cabrera and Saige Haney, and Junior Jackie Rodriguez.

Speech and Forensics:

The Speech and Forensics team had a long, rewarding Conference competition at Broadway High School on Feb.20. They came home with eight 1st place ribbons, five 2nd place ribbons, one 3rd place ribbon, and two 4th place ribbons. Senior Jonathan Corbin, Sophomore Kate Moncure, and Sophomore Madison Stafford all had perfect scores, helping the Flucos win their fifth consecutive conference title.

“The team did amazing at Conference. With two weeks of practice time before Regionals, I think the team will improve what it needs to and get an easy first place,” said Junior Nikola Bajs. Regionals will be held at Rockbridge High School on March 5, followed by States on April 2.
