Baseball

The Varsity team headed out to face Monticello on April 18. With freshman Kevin Ward on the mound, they had no trouble shutting out the Mustangs 9-0. “It felt great pitching a perfect game, but I could not have done it without my team behind me,” said Ward. The JV boys did not have as much luck that night as they took on Monticello at home. Even after putting up a solid fight, a few too many errors were collectively made and they were not able to keep up with Monticello’s strong hitting, losing by a final score of 7-1.

On April 20, the JV baseball team went head to head against Albemarle after a lengthy delay due to lightning strikes and an oncoming storm. Even after the storm, they were never able to take momentum in the game, and lost 7-1. As for varsity, they were hosted that night by Albemarle, but came out of the game with a 5-3 loss.

Softball

On April 17, the Varsity girls traveled to Monticello to take on the Mustangs. Two doubles by Candice Shaheen towards the end of the game were not enough to make up their deficit, and they ended up losing 12-2. At home the same night, the JV team was able to put away Monticello 9-4 with Tori Koczan pitching the whole game.

Both JV and varsity then hosted Albemarle at home on April 20. The JV team came out of the gate strong, and had a strong evening. “The Lady Flucos of our JV team had their game interrupted due to rain, but retook the field a little while later to rain their own havoc down on the Patriots. They erupted for 11 runs over the 3rd and 4th inning to take the [win] 11-1 in five innings,” said Coach Travis Bailey.

Bailey went on to congratulate Calista Marsh, who in her first start of the year “sparkled through four innings, allowing one run.” He added that Jenna Goodson was “perfect” at the plate, going three for three, while noting Kendall Gordon successfully brought in two doubles.

Varsity put up a tough battle and even faced a power outage in the middle of the game. Despite their team efforts, strong hitting by Tyler Haislip, and outstanding catching by Cassie Kingsley, they were unable to maintain a lead, and lost 5-4. “As a team, we need to make adjustments more efficiently, and learn from our mistakes instead of hold on to them,” said Haislip.

Girls’ Soccer

On April 17, both the JV and varsity girls’ soccer teams were both at home facing Monticello. The JV team came out first, and were able to steal a 3-0 victory with Alex Valladares, Kelsea Herring, and Tallon Solga each scoring a goal. The varsity team’s outcome was just the opposite, as they lost 4-0.

JV and Varsity were both at home again on April 20, but this time they were set to compete against the Albemarle Patriots. They took the field after being delayed for lightning, and a full stadium power outage made for an exciting halftime. Unfortunately, it ended up being a disappointing night for both of the teams after JV went down 4-0 and varsity lost 8-0. “We need to improve on our touches and overall communication,” said varsity goalie Jilian Stutz.

Boys’ Soccer

For last week’s action, the JV and varsity boys’ soccer teams had to travel for both of their games. On April 17, they headed out to play Monticello which gave them some tough competition. The JV team was able to pull out a victory by a narrow margin of 2-1. Even with the combined three goals by Emory Davis, Alex Scalzo, and Mauricio Castillo, the varsity boys were unable to take the game, and lost 5-3. “We have been playing good recently, but we tend to struggle with closing out games,” said senior Ben Mooney.

Next, both teams traveled to Albemarle on April 20. After a rain delay, the JV team had a tough game and fell to the Patriots 4-0. As for the varsity boys, they were able to score one goal, but after that it was all in Albemarle’s favor and they were defeated 5-1.

Track

On April 14, the girls’ and boys’ track team squeezed on a bus and went to a Woodberry Mini Meet at Woodberry Forest. In almost every event, the Flucos took first, second and third place.

The Flucos also hosted their first home meet of the season on April 15, which included Powhatan and Western. Although it was colder than usual, that didn’t stop them from running hard and cheering each other on. “I think we did really good for our first home meet and we can just get better,” said Alexus Campbell.

Athletes who placed in the top three in their event included Madison Brown, Jordan Winsheimer, Cyan Coates, Alex Daniels, Chaniyah Brown, Madison Haislip, Abigail Sherman, Hattie Lintecum, Renee Custer, Delaney Reed, Jules Shephard, Madison Stoltz, and Khailah Lee. The girls’ 4×800 meter and 4×400 meter relays also did exceptionally well at the meet, with the Lady Flucos’ team taking first place overall.

Meanwhile, the boys had a good night, with a number of Fluco athletes placing in the top three, including Colby Martin, Dante Eddings, Victor Agee, Jason Boyle, Kevin Burruss, Ledric Reid, Trevor O’Dell, Alden Custer, Christian Holland, Drew Hamshar, Matthew Haden and Prophett Harris. The boys’ 4×800 meter  relay also took first place at the meet, and the boys placed second overall.  “We had a lot of really solid performances from our younger athletes, so it’s a really exciting time for boys’ track,” said Coach Steven Szarmach.

Girls’ Tennis

The girls’ tennis team went up against Monticello at home on April 18. For their first matches of the week, the Lady Flucos won 5 to 4. “This was a great victory for the girls as Monticello beat them 7-2 in the first contest,” said Coach Feda Morton. Although their singles didn’t go as well as they hoped, they came back in doubles with Sarah White and Lydia Napier winning their doubles match and Ema Graham and Yolaine Scolan winning as well. On April 20, the Lady Flucos’ had a competition against Albemarle at home, but it was cancelled due to rain.

Boys’ Tennis

In boys’ tennis action, the team travelled to Monticello on April 18 and to Albemarle on April 20. In their fight against the Mustangs, the boys trampled them with an overall team score of 6-3.  Eugene Chow and Ian Dillon won their singles matches, while Nikola Bajs/Eugene Chow and Ian Dillon/Dylan Carrier won their doubles matches.  “They played well as a team and we had some people step up to help us beat Monticello,” said Coach Mitchell Pace. As for their game against Albemarle on the 20th, it was cancelled due to rain.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The varsity Lady Flucos travelled to Monticello High School on April 18. Overall, the girls couldn’t keep up with the Mustangs, but played stronger and more aggressively in the second half. “I showed a big improvement from when I first played on varsity against Monticello last year,” said Bri Wagner. Ultimately, the girls fought hard, but fell short with an ending score of 18-4.

Boys’ Lacrosse

On April 18, the varsity team was at home against the Monticello Mustangs. They played a good and strong first half and were up by one, but ended up losing 6-11. “We did fairly well with just losing one of our leading attack men to a knee injury,” said Shaun Cobb.
