Baseball

The varsity baseball team took on the the Western Albemarle Warriors at home on March 27. The Flucos came into this game with a record of 2-1, defeating Spotswood and Powhatan, but coming up just short against Louisa. Fluvanna knew they had a tough matchup ahead of them with the Warriors also being 2-1.

The starting pitcher for the Flucos, junior Shaun Holyfield, was able to keep the hits to a minimum, only giving up one run in four innings. Sophomore Jacob Critzer then hit an RBI double to right field and overall went 2-4. Junior Noah Brown, a relief pitcher, also did a fantastic job pitching in the fifth and sixth innings, only giving up one hit.

Freshman Cameron Shields then came into the game with the score tied 1-1 in the seventh inning, and was able to keep the Warriors from scoring in the seventh and eighth innings. Shields started the ninth inning, giving up two hits and a walk, before Fluvanna replaced him with sophomore Kyle Algieri, who then walked a run-in in the ninth inning.

The Flucos then brought in senior Nathan Gentry who gave up a run on a wild pitch, which ended up being the deciding factor. “We worked well as a team. We were in the game the whole time, but the ball just didn’t fall our way,” said Shields. The final score ended up being 3-1, with Western winning, making the Flucos 2-2 this season.

The JV boys’ traveled to Western Albemarle taking on the Warriors on March 28. This was a very close matchup, but the Flucos were able to take advantage of the Warriors’ mistakes, winning 12-8 in ten innings. Softball

Meanwhile, the varsity team won their game against Orange as well, though not as easily as they might have wanted. “We were winning throughout the whole game [but] we let them come back. This led to overtime which the game shouldn’t have gone to. We won 3-2, so everything was good in the end,” said junior Noah Coppa.

Senior Rodney Moore described the last moments of the game ,which went into double overtime. “We got a lucky foul inside the goalie box. This gave us a penalty kick in the dying moments of the game which also resulted in us getting the win,” he said. Scoring for the Flucos were freshmen Mauricio Castillo and Emory Davis, as well as senior Alex Scalzo.

Two nights later, Fluvanna hosted Western at home on March 27 with both JV and Varsity losing their games 1-0. “This was our best game of the season by far, in my opinion, even though we lost. We could’ve prevented the goal if we had just stepped in and covered the man more, but we gave it our best. Sadly, we did not get the result we wanted,” said Moore.
