Fluvanna Sports in Review 1-27

Indoor Track

Of the eight schools attending the Jefferson District Track Championship at Heritage High School on Jan. 21, the Fluvanna boys placed 4th overall. “We definitely deserved our place. I mean, it was District Championship, [so] we tried our best and fought really hard for 4th place,” said Jason Boyle. All-District Honors was awarded to the following boys: Griffin Klauder (3rd in the 55 meter hurdles), John Bossong (6th in the 1000 meter run), Jason Boyle (5th in the 3200 meter run), Prophett Harris (3rd in high and triple jump, and 4th in long jump), Jake Morris (2nd in shot put), and Zach Hartzog (District Champion in shot put).

The boys’ team competed with Louisa in a qualifying meet on Jan. 24. Qualifying meets are not won by any one team, but rather, enable runners to qualify for state and conference competitions. Among the qualifiers was John Bossong, who qualified for Conference in the 1000 meter run.

Meanwhile, the girls’ indoor team managed to grasp 3rd place for themselves at Heritage, with these students receiving All-District Honors: Matasha Martin (District Champion in the 55 meter dash), LaMaya Lacey (District Champion in 55 meter hurdles), Cyan Coates (2nd in 500 meter run), Saige Haney (District Champion in the 1600 meter run and 6th in the 1000 meter run), and Amina Wilson (6th in the pole vault).

In the meet with Louisa on Jan. 24, the following girls had state qualifications: Kieri Hart, Cyan Coates, Jackie Rodriguez, and Saige Haney (4×8 relay race), Renee Custer (shot put), and Cyan Coates (300 meter run). “It was very exciting to have so many of our runners qualifying,” said Girls’ Indoor Track Coach Rose Brogan.

Girls’ Basketball

Albemarle High School came to Fluvanna on Jan. 24 to face off in basketball. Fluvanna’s varsity girls took the lead early in the first quarter, but as the rest of the game transpired, the Fluco girls had to fight to keep their score on par with Albemarle’s. In the final seconds of the game, the Albemarle finally pulled away, winning by a score of 39-37.

“We had our chances, but where Albemarle’s patience showed, ours lacked. Our third quarter was bad, but we did well coming back to tie in the fourth. We will definitely grow from this. We will not see something like this happen again,” said Coach Nick Ward.

“We didn’t play the game until the very end like we should have. We thought we had to expand our lead. Had we taken it slow, we would have definitely taken the win,” said Kyia Scott.

Some exceptional performances came from Jemika Johnson who put up 14 points (12 of which were rebounds), and Kyia Scott who scored two points from steals and four from rebounds.

In the Junior Varsity game with Albemarle, the Fluco girls also fell short, losing 34-25.

Boys’ Basketball

The Fluvanna Flucos basketball team competited against Orange County on Jan. 20, then took on Albermarle on Jan. 24. Coming off a loss on Jan. 24, Head Coach Jason Davis discussed how they planned to take on the Monticello Black Knights in an upcoming game. “We are watching film and breaking down Monticello so we can continue to put forth our best effort,” he said.

With just eight games left, the Flucos are hoping to finish the rest of their season on a high note. “We are going to keep going to practice and working the best we can and performing the best we can,” said Junior AJ Gregory.

Wrestling

The wrestling team has struggled with a smaller number of team players this season, but they have persevered, with an number of players making a name for themselves, including Ian Dillon, who was selected as the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Jan. 21 tournament against Covenant, Madison, William Fleming, and FUMA.  Overall, however, the team had a hard time on the mat that day, only overtaking Covenant.  “The team struggled to stay focused the second round of the tournament,” said Assistant Coach Jordan Divine.

Following that tournament, the team had a match at Powhatan on Jan. 25, where standouts wrestlers included Dillon, who won his match 3-1, and John Bland, who won his match 2-1. “We were well-conditioned and we wrestled smart,” said Dillon. Their Conference meet will be held at Western on Feb. 4.

Scholastic Bowl

This week the Scholastic Bowl team had many different ups and downs including a loss to both Fort Defiance and Western Albermarle high schools on Jan. 23. “I enjoyed Conference, but we did get knocked out by Fort Defiance,” said Senior Sampson Conti.  Although losing to those two teams, they took some satisfaction in beating out both Waynesboro and Turner Ashby high schools that night. ”I felt awesome about this meet. I got the opportunity to answer lots of questions. Honestly, it was my favorite meet so far,” said Senior Annaliese Estes. In their last competition of the season, the team will compete in the Battle of the the Brains on Jan. 31, which will be filmed and then televised at a later date.
